The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested a top leader of the banned militant outfit Hizb ut-Tahrir.
He was arrested from Bashundhara residential area by the City Intelligence Analysis Division of the CTTC.
The arrestee was identified as Imtiaz Selim alias Imadul Amin. He is one of the current leaders of the banned militant outfit.
He completed his bachelor’s and master’s from North South University and was employed at a multinational company in Dhaka’s Banani, according to the CTTC.
During a press briefing at the DMP media centre, DMP Additional Commissioner and CTTC chief Md Asaduzzaman said the outfit had been carrying out militant activities in the country since its inception.
The CTTC additional police commissioner also said that on September 30 they organized an online conference against the government.
“They ran campaigns across the country, including Dhaka, calling for people to participate in the conference. Two speakers and one presenter participated in the conference using pseudonyms.”
“Speakers at the conference deliberately presented wrong information about the government’s various development activities and the government’s relations with different countries, including the USA,” said the CTTC chief.
Assaduzzaman said the outfit was instigating people by misinterpreting religion to establish an Islamic state by establishing a regime under the leadership of Hizb ut-Tahrir.
The online conference was broadcast live on a Lebanon-based YouTube channel, according to the CTTC.
Regarding the arrestee, the CTTC chief said: “Imtiaz first came to know about the banned outfit Hizb ut-Tahrir through a friend in 2010 after graduating from the university and joined the organization. On May 12, 2010, he was arrested for his involvement with Hizb ut-Tahrir and was in jail for six months as an accused in a case filed with Badda police station.”
During his stay in jail, Imtiaz Salim came in contact with Prof Dr Syed Ghulam Mawla and Prof Mohiuddin, the founders of Hizb ut-Tahrir in Bangladesh and became more attached to the militant outfit, said DMP Additional Commissioner Asaduzzaman.
