Afghans can apply to bring families to America: US State Department

By Fidel Rahmati in The Khaama Press Online, December 3, 2023
Based on the new facilities, the U.S. Department of State has announced that Afghan citizens residing in the United States who hold Green Cards and Special Immigrant Visas (SIVs) and temporary residency can now apply for residency for their family members in Afghanistan.

On Saturday, December 2nd, the U.S. Department of State stated that the U.S. government has introduced these new “Family Joining Visas” for Afghan citizens due to humanitarian reasons.

In a statement released by the U.S. Department of State, it has been mentioned that “if you are a U.S. citizen, your spouse, children, and parents may be eligible for immediate immigration to the United States. U.S. citizens can also apply for their unmarried adult siblings and children, who may then immigrate after receiving the appropriate visa.”

According to the announcement, holders of Green Cards and individuals who have entered the United States through Special Immigrant Visas (SIVs) can also apply to invite their family members.

The U.S. Department of State will process these requests as quickly as possible. If the request is approved, the National Visa Center of that country will contact the family members of Afghan residents in the United States to apply for their immigrant visas.

Furthermore, in the statement by the department, it is mentioned that individuals with permanent residency in the United States can apply for immigration to the U.S. for their spouses and unmarried children under 21 years of age.

This comes in the wake of the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, causing thousands of Afghan citizens to seek refuge in countries in the Americas and Europe.
