Human trafficking: 34 Rohingyas including children rescued in Cox’s Bazar, 2 held

Thirty-four Rohingyas, mostly children, were rescued when they were being gathered in Cox’s Bazar Central Bus Terminal area for trafficking, police said.

Two suspected human traffickers were also detained from the spot.

Among the rescued people, 16 are children, aged between one to five, 10 women and eight men, Officer-in-Charge of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station Rafiqul Islam told The Daily Star.

They all are residents of camps in Teknaf and Ukhia upazilas of the district.

“Last night, three to four people tried to escape when police reached the spot after receiving information that traffickers were gathering Rohingyas in Central Bus Terminal in Larpara area.”

“At that time, it was possible to detain two people,” he said, adding that 34 Rohingyas were rescued.

“A case has been filed with Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station against the two suspected human traffickers, and on orders from higher authorities, the rescued Rohingyas will be handed over to their respective camp administrations,” the OC added.
