One child was killed, and another was injured when an explosive device left over from a past conflict exploded in the Deyak district of Afghanistan’s eastern Ghazni province, according to provincial spokesperson Niyaz Mohammad.
On Sunday, two youngsters, ages 9 and 12, found the explosive device that resembled a toy and tried to carry it home. However, a provincial official said that the explosive device detonated quickly, killing one of the children on the spot and injuring the other.
A similar incident occurred in the Nangarhar province of Afghanistan, killing two sisters.
Meanwhile, on May 9, another incident occurred in the southern province of Kandahar, killing three children from the same family.
The incident occurred in Haji Aziz area of Kandahar City when the children found the mortal mine which had been left from the past wars.
According to the official, the siblings were playing with the mine when it exploded, killing all three.
In recent years, unexploded bombs from earlier conflicts have proliferated nationwide, killing and injuring men, women, including children.
International organizations, including Australia, Denmark, Germany, Japan, Sweden, the United States, the United Kingdom, and the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), have made contributions to support demining in the country since last November.
Afghanistan is one of the most contaminated with unexploded mines in the world due to the four decades of conflict, killing dozens of people each month, including children.
