The European Parliament adopted three resolutions on the respect for human rights in Russia, Afghanistan and Nigeria on Thursday.
The resolution calls on the EU and its member states to exert diplomatic pressure directly or indirectly on Afghanistan’s de-facto authorities to secure the release of all those arbitrarily detained, as well as to increase support to Afghan groups providing education to women and girls, the European Parliament said on its website.
Members of the European Parliament “denounce the Taliban ban on secondary and university education for women in Afghanistan, as well as the ban on women from working for non-governmental organizations and the United Nations.”
This comes as the ban on girls’ schools beyond grade six have remained closed for nearly two years as of now.
“We call on the government of the Islamic Emirate to reopen the schools for us after Eid al-Fitr so we can study,” said Dunya, a student.
UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell in an interview with ABC news said that the place for women and girls is getting “more and more” constrained.
“For us, we stay, we try to provide as much as we can to a population that is in desperate need. I mean we estimate that 28 million are in humanitarian need in that country,” she said.
“The best way is to observe the voices of the citizens of Afghanistan and practically ensure the human rights and Islamic rights of the people of Afghanistan particularly the women in Afghanistan,” said Marriam Arveen, a human rights defender.
Previously, the Islamic Emirate said that the rights of women and girls are observed within an Islamic structure in Afghanistan.
