Abdus Sattar Bhuiyan unofficially won the by-polls to Brahmanbaria-2 (Sarail and Ashuganj) by a big margin than his nearest contestant Jatiya party candidate, Abdul Hamid Bhasani, as the former bagged 44,916 votes and the latter 9,635 in 132 centres.
The returning officer of the by-polls and the deputy commissioner Md Shagir Alam announced the result on Wednesday at 9:30pm, adding that 60,122 out of 373,319 voters in the constituency exercised their franchise, which accounted for only 16.10 per cent turnover.
In the election, Abu Asif Ahmed, a former president of Ashuganj unit BNP, who has been missing since 27 January, secured 3,269 votes and the candidate of Zaker Party, Jahirul Islam, 1,560 votes.
It is learnt that the ruling Awami-League (AL) supported Abdus Sattar, who stepped down from the parliament as a lawmaker of the same constituency, abiding by the direction of BNP

By-elections to six constituencies ended without any major untoward incident on Wednesday, but voter turnout was very thin, according to Election Commission officials.
The six constituencies which went to polls are Thakurgaon-3, Bogra-4 and 6, Chapainawabganj 2 and 3, and Brahmanbaria-2.
Electronic voting machines (EVMs) were used in the elections, but the EC did not install CCTV cameras in the polling centres.
Ruling Awami League’s Ragebul Ahsan Ripu won the Bogra-4 (Sadar) constituency by bagging 49,336 votes against independent candidate Abdul Mannan Akanda.
Ripu is the first Awami League candidate to win the seat after 1973.
In Bogra-4 seat, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JaSoD) candidate AKM Rezaul Karim Tansen defeated his closest rival, Ashraful Islam Alam alias Hero Alam, by 800 votes.
