Work on Indian projects in Afghanistan has been halted over security and political situation, Indian media reported, citing the country’s External Affairs Ministry.
Based on the reports, India’s development partnership with Afghanistan includes more than 500 projects spread across each of its 34 provinces and in various sectors.
“Several proposals in this regard are already under process. Due to the political and security situation in Afghanistan, projects implementation has suffered setbacks,” a statement of India’s Ministry of External Affairs said as quoted by NDTV.
Afghanistan’s Ministry of Economy said the resumption of development projects in the country would create job opportunities for people across the country.
“Resumption of development projects will enhance economic development, reduce poverty, and increase jobs,” Deputy Minister of Economy Abdul Latif Nazari said.
According to the Ministry of Economy, work on projects supported by India has been completed by 70 percent.
“Work on 70 percent of projects has been completed in rural areas in 34 provinces, including the construction of schools, hospitals, clinics, dormitories, local institutions, roads, water reservoirs, sport stadiums and parks,” said Abdul Rahman Habib, a spokesman for the Economy Ministry.
Analysts said the resumption of India-funded projects would improve Afghanistan’s relations with the region and will create jobs for the people.
“It will have a positive impact on the country’s economy if they resume the projects in Afghanistan,” said Darya Khan Bahir, an analyst.
Earlier, the Ministry of Urban Development said that it is expected that India will begin work on 12 projects in Afghanistan.
