During the last days of Ashraf Ghani’s government, high-ranking officials helped smuggle around $1 billion in cash and gold out of the country, Business Insider the American media company reported.
The American media published a report on Tuesday, showing that during the last three months of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, as districts were falling to the Taliban fighters one after another, smugglers with the help of government officials sneaked out around $1 billion out of the country.
Based on the reports, the office of former President Ashraf Ghani was aware of the problem but denied taking action. Business Insider has obtained documents showing that $59.7 million in cash and gold have been transferred to Uzbekistan, and from there to the United Arab Emirates in the first three months of 2021.
The report further indicates that from May 2019 to May 2020, the total amount being sneaked from Afghanistan is about $824 million. Earlier also, Ashraf Ghani was accused of taking nearly $200 million cash from Afghanistan’s bank reserves with him while fleeing the country in August 2021.
Research findings indicate that the massive level of corruption in Ghani’s government is considered to be one of the key factors in his regime’s fall.
