Naheed likely G-B Governor

By Maqbool Malik Submitted in The Nation, Dec 31

ISLAMABAD – Naheed Khan, former MNA and political secretary to the assassinated PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto, is unlikely to accept party offer for the slot of the first governor of Gilgit-Baltistan.
“We don’t need any office. What we expect from the party leadership is to consider our proposals seriously which we have floated for the betterment of the party,” Senator Dr Safdar Abbasi, husband of Naheed Khan, informed TheNation when contacted for comments on Wednesday.
He said that party leadership has discussed no proposal for the gubernatorial slot with them so far. “We are part and parcel of the party and do not need any office,” Abbasi maintained, adding being committed party workers they are interested that party high command must resolve the issues relating to the party.
However, other PPP sources privy to these developments were still upbeat that President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Gilani were inclined to offer Naheed Khan the slot of Gilgit-Baltistan governor.
President Zardari while addressing second death anniversary of late Benazir Bhutto at Naudero on December 27 categorically stated that one of the party women workers close to Benazir Bhutto would be appointed as the governor of Gilgit-Baltistan.
The sources further informed that PPP leadership has conveyed its decision to party leadership in Gilgit-Baltistan. They revealed that name of Naheed was on the top of the list of women being considered by the party leadership for the proposed gubernatorial slot.
Other names being discussed by the party leadership are Faryal Talpur, Bushra Aitzaz, former information minister Sherry Rehman and Federal Minister Sameena Khalid Ghurki. The name would be finalised within next few days, the sources further informed.
