Explosive device found near railway station in Rawalpindi.
RAWALPINDI: An improvised explosive device (IED) was found near the railway station on Wednesday.
A locally-made device, containing about 1kg of explosive material filled in a plastic bottle with a detonator, was described by bomb disposal experts as mobile device.
It was lying adjacent to an under-construction building in the vicinity of Mithu Khan Ahata Saddar along Railway Road.
The IED was spotted by the building contractor and called the Rescue 15.
Police, bomb disposal experts, the CTD staff and special branch officials immediately reached the scene and cordoned off the area. Regional Police Officer (RPO) Imran Ahmar also visited the scene.
The bomb disposal squad successfully defused the device and handed it over to the CTD for further investigations. However, no arrests have been made in connection with the recovery of the IED.
According to police sources, the under-construction building belonged to one of the top investors in Pakistan.
The area was being cleared.
However, when the RPO was contacted, he didn’t reply to the call despite repeated attempts.
Earlier on Dec 13, last year a hand grenade was lobbed on shoe selling vendors in front of Ganjmandi police station, leaving 13 people injured, none of them seriously.
It was the fifth incident in the garrison city this year and second during the last eight days.
However, a day after the hand grenade was lobbed in Ganjmandi area, the CTD had claimed that they had traced solved four of cases.

ASWJ chief booked under anti-terror law
Karachi: Police have registered a case against Maulana Aurangzeb Farooqi, chief of the banned Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ), under the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997.
The FIR has been lodged under Section IIEE (4) of the law at the Shah Latif Police Station on behalf of the state. Police said Farooqi had been booked for leaving the city without informing the police as his name was on list of the Fourth Schedule.
A police officer, who is the complainant in the FIR, said Farooqi left for Punjab without informing the police and therefore a case had been registered against him. As part of streamlining the record of suspects on a watch list under the ATA, a provincial committee had recommended a list of 118 individuals associated with different sectarian and proscribed outfits to re-notify them under the Fourth Schedule in 2017.
The Fourth Schedule is a list of proscribed individuals who are suspected to be involved in terrorism and/or sectarianism under Section 11EE of the ATA 1997, which states that whenever the government receives information that an individual is associated with an organisation kept under observation, it may recommend the person’s name for the Fourth Schedule. The name of a suspect is usually placed on the Fourth Schedule for three years, but its placement can be extended if needed.
