Opp stands firm on Mandviwalla’s motion against NAB chief

Report in Pakistan Today, Dec 28, 2020
ISLAMABAD: The opposition parties in the Senate have reiterated their resolve to stand firm on the House’s deputy chairman Saleem Mandviwalla’s motion against National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairman retired Justice Javed Iqbal.

Reports suggest the united opposition will hold a meeting to mull over the matter of accountability in Senate on December 30.

However, the reports further suggested the parties have refused to budge over the summons issued to Iqbal.

After NAB froze his assets in connection with an ongoing investigation into a fake bank accounts scam, Mandviwalla heaped scorns on the anti-graft agency, declaring: “It is a blackmailing organisation. It is an extortion organisation. It is an organisation which violates human rights.”

“I have decided to highlight NAB’s human rights violations at every international forum,” he said after the agency informed an accountability court that it had frozen 3.1 million shares of different companies registered in the name of Mandviwala with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) in connection with the case.

“I will take NAB before [the] European Union, United Nations and every private entity and human rights body of the world,” he had said.

In a later press conference, Mandviwalla announced to summon Iqbal to Senate to answer questions about the watchdog’s purportedly illegal actions.

He said “production warrants” will be issued for the NAB chief if he refuses to appear in the upper house.

Mandviwalla had earlier announced a special session of the Senate to take up a privilege motion that he submitted against Iqbal earlier this month.
