ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) has held the government responsible for the ongoing volatile political situation in the country.
A meeting of the council presided over by PBC vice chairman Abid Saqi here on Monday adopted a resolution expressing serious concern over alleged government moves to hinder political activities just to cover its “bad governance and incompetence to handle public issues”.
The PBC will elect its new body on Dec 31.
The resolution alleged that it is a matter of grave concern that the government, while claiming the support of the army, is pressurising political parties by arresting their leaders and workers before and during public meetings.
The PBC accused the government of adding miseries of the people in the shape of rapid increase in prices of essential commodities and utility charges.
The resolution observed that all the state institutions are duty-bound to remain within their defined constitutional limits.
The PBC reiterated its earlier stance of bringing reforms in the process of appointment of upright, competent, honest and professionally experienced persons as judges of the superior courts, after meaningful consultation with representatives of the bars.
On the independence of judiciary, the resolution reiterated its absolute and unambiguous longstanding stance in respect of mala fide reference filed by the government against Justice Qazi Faez Isa, which was later rightly rejected by the Supreme Court.
The council resolved to continue its struggle for the independence of the judiciary.
