Awami League-backed candidate Zahangir Alam has won the Gazipur City Corporation mayoral election amid allegations of irregularities in some polling stations.
In 416 out of 425 polling stations, Zahangir bagged 400,010 votes with boat symbol and his nearest arch rival BNP’s Hasan Uddin Sarker won 197,611 votes, said Returning Officer Rakib Uddin Mondol citing unofficial results on Wednesday.
The voting at the city corporation with around 1.14 million voters was held from 8am to 4pm on Tuesday.
The Election Commission postponed voting at nine centres for irregularities such as snatching of ballot boxes and stuffing of ballot papers by force. The number of voters in the nine centres where voting was suspended is around 24,000, according to the commission.
“After completing all the formalities, the unofficial results will shortly be announced,” Assistant Returning Officer Md Nazrul Islam told bdnews24.com.
According to the EC, a total of 648,749 votes were cast in 416 centres. Of the votes, 18,638 have been cancelled for various reasons. As a result, the total number of valid votes stood at 630,111.
Around 58 percent votes were cast in the election. The number excludes 23,995 votes in the nine centres where voting was suspended, EC Deputy Secretary Forhad Hossain told bdnews24.com.
Rejecting the election, the BNP has already branded it as a grand festival of fake votes. It alleged their polling agents were driven out of more than 100 centres, beaten up and arrested.https://bdnews24.com/bangladesh/2018/06/27/awami-league-backed-zahangir-alam-wins-gazipur-city-election
