Food minister Qamrul Islam. Prothom Alo File PhotoRuling Bangladesh Awami League (AL) MP and food minister Qamrul Islam on Monday said his party’s arch enemy Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will witness its breakup soon.
The minister made the remarks just four days after the BNP chief and former prime minister Khaleda Zia was sent to jail.
“I am telling those who are trying to keep the integrity of your party intact that the integrity [of the party] will not sustain. Splitting BNP is now a matter of time,” Qamrul Islam told a discussion meeting at the National Press Club.
The AL leader said the process of splitting BNP has begun with amendment of its constitution.
Qamrul claimed that BNP insiders have started speaking out against party’s decision to make a “fugitive accused”, Tarique Rahman, its acting chairman.
“The party senior leaders are bound to work out an alternative.”
He, however, claimed that the AL-government would not split the BNP.
“There will have no need of any government efforts [to split the party]. The government has no target to break up the party. Let’s see how much time it takes to split it. Enthusiastic people and newsmen are waiting. In fact, it’s inevitable. Your party’s conscientious leaders can’t stay with an absconding accused,” said Qamrul.
There is a strong hearsay in the political arena that the AL-led government would exploit all the means possible to split its arch rival BNP keeping its chief behind bars in the run up to the next general elections slated to be held in the yearend.
