report in Dhaka Tribune, Jan 31, 2018 at 9.50pm
Detectives have allegedly picked up BNP Information Affairs Secretary Azizul Baree Helal from his Magbazar residence in Dhaka.
Azizul, a former president of the party’s student front Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, was picked up on Wednesday around 8pm, claimed BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
Meanwhile, five leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal have been detained from Dhaka the same day, according to BNP.
However, police have yet to confirm their detention.
Earlier, police detained over 70 leaders and activists of BNP —including Standing Committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, and National Executive Committee members Onindo Islam Omit and Obaidul Haque Nasir— from different places in Dhaka.
Their arrests followed an attack allegedly by BNP men on law enforcers near the High Court on Tuesday as party chief Khaleda Zia appeared before a special court in Bakshibazar area for the ongoing trial of the Zia Charitable Trust graft case.
They also broke two police rifles when the law enforcers tried to resist the demonstrators, according to police.
Gayeshwar sent to jail, Omit put on remand: A Dhaka court on Wednesday sent Gayeshwar to jail and put Omit on remand after police produced them the court.
Addressing an emergency press briefing following the arrest of Gayeshwar, a member of the party’s policymaking body, Rizvi said: “Gayeshwar has been arrested at a time when people are taking preparations to resist a conspiracy by the governmentagainst our leader Khaleda Zia.
“He has been arrested as part of a dangerous and evil design of the government.”
The BNP leader said the government already instructed police to arrest their party leaders and activists as a last resort to stay in power. Rizvi warned that the government would not be able to spread panic among BNP men across the country by arresting them. http://www.dhakatribune.com/bangladesh/politics/2018/01/31/bnp-leader-azizul-bari/
