Bogra: Abu Sayeed aka Talha Sheikh, arrested on Saturday, became the leader of Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh or JMB’s southern region after marrying the daughter of a militant leader in India eight years ago, police say.
The information regarding Sayeed, who was arrested in Bogra’s Nandigram, was revealed by Additional DIG and acting Bogra superintendent of police Md Asaduzzaman at a media briefing on Saturday.
Sayeed became the JMB chief in Naogaon district in 2005 and was involved in the 2005 nationwide simultaneous bombing attacks, Asaduzzaman told the media.
Two years later, he fled to India and in 2009, married ‘Khadijah’, the daughter of JMB member ‘Eyadul’ in Murshidabad and resumed his militant activities.
Sayeed, who goes by several names including Ahmed Karim, Tayyeb, Talha, Shyamol, Hossein, Sajid, Danger, Shakil, Mokhles and Shafiq, was arrested in possession of weapons in Nandigram’s Omarpur Bazar around 1am on Saturday.
Sayeed has been named in a case over a 2014 bombing at Bardhaman’s Khagrhagarh in West Bengal, police said.
