Chittagong Customs House seized a container of radioactive materials from Chittagong port on August 22.
Assistant Commissioner of Chittagong Customs House Md Habibur Rahman confirmed the matter.
Habibur said: “Primary tests have found the presence of radioactive material in the seized container. We have written to the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) to carry out final tests.”
“The BAEC has already collected samples from the seized container,” he said, adding that they would take legal action against the export firm after receiving the final test report.
“An export firm, Citadel Global Corporation, brought the container to the port for shipment. The container was bound for China through Sri Lanka via Singapore,” the customs official added.
Radioactive materials are known to cause damage to the human body, weakening and damaging DNA in cells.
