700 militants abandon Jawzjan district with the arrival of Gen. Dostum KHAAMA PRESS – Thu Feb 25 2016, 10:24 am

Around 700 anti-government armed militants have reportedly abandoned Qosh Tapa district with the arrival of Vice President General Abdul Rashid Dostum.

Gen. Dostum is accompanied by nearly 10,000 members of the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) and is currently in Jawzjan to clear the areas under the Taliban control.

Speaking to local residents, Gen. Dostum said he has not visited Jawzjan to wage war and invited the anti-government armed militants to join the peace process.

He said war is not a solution and called on anti-government armed militants to join peace process and stop further bloodshed.

Meanwhile, he warned the anti-government militants for pursuing violence, saying the consequences would be unpleasant if they opted to continue insurgency.

According to the local residents, several villages have been cleared of the militants since the operations were launched two days ago and the security forces are currently busy to remove Improvised Explosive Device (IED) left by the militants on the roadsides.

This is the third time Gen. Dostum is joining the Afghan forces to clear parts of northern provinces from the militants presence.

Gen. Dostum first joined the Afghan security forces in the frontline in northern Faryab province earlier in the month of August last where he survived at least two assassination plots by the anti-government armed militant groups while he was leading counter-terrorism operations.

Initially his convoy was ambushed by the Taliban in militants in Qaisar district in mid August while another plot to assassinate him was thwarted by the security forces and his special security guards few days later.

At least three suicide bombers were arrested from the vicinity of Gen. Dostum’s residence in Qaisar district in connection to the attack plot.
