11 militants killed, 35 held in Peshawar since February

PESHAWAR: Eleven militants were killed and 35 others arrested along with 477 facilitators during the 40 intelligence-based operations carried out by the police since February 15, according to a report prepared by the Peshawar Intelligence and Response Cell (PIRC).

The report, a copy of which is available with Dawn, also said that five networks of extortionists and 23 networks of hundi-hawala were also busted during the operations. It stated that 154 sanitisation operations were carried out by the police and 425 joint checkposts were established.

The report further said that in their efforts to uproot militant support network, the police carried out 779 operations and arrested 1,451 proclaimed offenders, 5,922 suspects, 2,593 violators of standard operating procedures of the Tenant Act.

The report said that 928 illegal immigrants were arrested, besides 2,843 weapons and 57,982 rounds were also recovered during the operations.

According to the PIRC report, the police-public liaison committees were activated and mapping and surveillance of workshops, hotels, inns and other places completed.

The report said that strict checking was being carried out on the Bus Rapid Transit to curb transportation of contraband. It added that the traffic police removed tinted sheet from the windows of 10,299 vehicles.
