Kohistanis warn Wapda to stop work on Dasu Dam

MANSEHRA: Residents of Kohistan have warned Wapda to stop work on the 4320mw Dasu hydropower project, otherwise they would stop it forcibly and would also block Karakoram Highway for an indefinite period.

The warning came at a jirga held after failure of talks with Deputy Commissioner Upper Kohistan Zafarul Islam on Monday.Owners of the lands, both east and west sides of River Indus, met Zafarul Islam and apprised him about their decision of not accepting prices fixed by the district administration for the lands to be inundated under water reservoirs of Dasu dam.

The district administration, according to sources, has divided the land into three categories and price of category-A was fixed Rs1 million per kanal, category-B Rs0.7 million and category-C Rs0.2 million.

Islam asked people to go to court in case they were not accepting the prices as it was appropriate and even higher than the market prices. He said it was a project of national interest and would also equally benefit the people of Kohistan.

“You should not only think of prices but see how much benefits you and your offspring would get from this project as thousands of jobs would be created besides huge financial activities in the district, has been an underdeveloped district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa,” the official said.

Umer Khan, Shamsur Rehman and Haji Fazalur Rehman, who represented affected people of western side of River Indus, and Qari Mohammad Saeed and Manan Shah from the eastern side, said the government had fixed inadequate prices of their lands. http://www.thenews.com.pk/Todays-News-2-274486-Kohistanis-warn-Wapda-to-stop-work-on-Dasu-Dam
