Mirpur shut against electricity overbilling; Report in the Nation, Dec 16, 2014

MIRPUR (AJK): Life in Mirpur city was shuddered to a halt by shutdown observed by all segments of civil society in protest against “intolerable” electricity overbilling.

The call for the strike was given by Mirpur Protection Forum comprising a number of organizations representing people of all walks of life to register strong protest against inflated electricity bills served on consumers by the AJK State Electricity Department,

Leaders of the Mirpur Protection Forum including its Chairman Muhammad Ayub Muslim, Mirpur District Bar Association President Khalid Rasheed Chaudhry, Muhammad Azeem Dutt, AJKCCI president Ch Javed Iqbal and office bearers of Anjuman-e-Tajraan Mirpur including Sohail Shujah Mujahid, Ch Muhammad Naeem, Asif Dar Raja Khalid Mahmood, Ch Shoukat Ali, Leaders of Muslim Conference and PML-N Leaders, Chairman Jammu Kashmir Human Rights Commission Humayoon Zaman Mirza, PPP AJK leaders Ch Muhammad Mansha led the processions to Shaheed Chowk taken out from different parts of the city.

Thousands of protestors staged a sit-in at Shaheed chowk for the whole day. Earlier the furious citizens blocked major roads including Allama Iqbal Road, Fazil Chowk sector F/1 and Sector F/2 and other residential areas leading to Shaheed Chowk by placing burning tyres. The shopkeepers pulled down shutters and took to the street by blocking Shaheed chowk.

Addressing the rally, MPF leaders including Muhammad Ayub Muslim, the AJK CCI President, presidents and others bitterly criticized the Wapda and the AJK Electricity Department for imposing heavy electricity billing upon local consumers, defying all commitments in the wake of construction and later recent upraising of the country’s biggest reservoir – Mangla Dam.

Raising slogans against the Wapda and the AJK Electricity Department, speakers announced to continue protest against the overbilling to press the Wapda and the AJK government for early acceptance of their demand for withdrawal raise in power tariff besides complete exemption of Mirpur from the power outage.
