Chinese children have to clamber over ‘mountain’ of dumped construction waste to get to school By Daniel Zhou in South China Morning Post, Aug 25, 2016

Children had to walk over a “mountain of waste” to get to their school in northern China on the first day of classes after the summer break, according to a news website.

The refuse blocked a road used by many children to get to the campus in Zhengzhou in Henan province, Eastday.com.

The refuse was mainly construction waste and covered an area 50 metres long and was two metres high, according to the article.

Some parents removed some of the debris to open up a narrow aisle for the children to pass through.

The road was clean before the summer break, an unnamed parent was quoted as saying.

About 200 children have to pass through the road each day to get to school, the parent said.

Another parent complained that children have to take a detour of a few kilometres to avoid the road.

He also expressed concern about the safety of children who have to walk over gravel and steel bars.

Parents hope the local authorities, who have yet to give an official response, will get the waste removed and find out who dumped it, the report said.http://www.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/2008902/chinese-children-have-clamber-over-mountain-dumped-construction
