The Daily Times, Mar 19
ATTABAD: The water is rising day by day in this remote part of northern Pakistan, and with it, so is the fear among thousands who stand to lose their crops, their homes and maybe
even their lives.
A massive landslide early this year formed a natural dam in the Hunza River, creating a lake that is consuming upstream villages, as it expands. If the dam breaks, a flash flood could threaten downstream villages too. The landslide also has blocked the Karakoram Highway, a vital trade link to China, …

IT is hoped that discontent in Gilgit-Baltistan will now die down following the federal government’s out-of-court settlement with the thousands of families who will be displaced by the Diamer-Bhasha dam. Last month’s tragic incident in which two protesters were shot dead by security personnel is still fresh in people’s minds, and any further delay in arriving at a consensus solution could have exacerbated matters. The demands raised by those affected by Diamer-Bhasha included market-rate compensation for land acquired by the government, a healthy quota for local workers in jobs generated …

ISLAMABAD – The governments of Pakistan and Afghanistan naively overlooked the fact that bilateral trade was directly proportional to security situation.
Giving economy preference to security was an unimpressive show of imprudent diplomacy during Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s recent visit to Pakistan.
The mild attitude that Pakistan had shown towards Afghan President reflected that Pakistani authorities were so obliged by Karzai’s arrival that they deemed it better not to get into serious discussions about security issues and stick to economy and trade.
The helplessness …

WASHINGTON, March 13: The blasts in Lahore are the last desperate measures of pro-Al Qaeda militants who are now being abandoned by the Taliban, diplomatic sources told Dawn.
The sources also confirmed a Los Angeles Times report, published on Saturday, that the Taliban militants in Fata were now refusing to collaborate with Al Qaeda fighters.
The Taliban were declining to provide shelter or assist in attacks in Afghanistan even in return for payment, the report said.
“Yes, Pakistani intelligence sources also confirm this assessment,” said a …

By Indrani Bagchi, Times of India, Mar 14
NEW DELHI: Terror attacks in India have graduated from the bombs-on-trains variety to commando-like operations in Mumbai, or blasts like the Germany Bakery in Pune.
But thus far, India has been spared the suicide bomber – the kind that rammed into the Indian embassy in Kabul, or into the CIA tent in Khost, or even in the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad.
That could change. In a development that has raised concerns in the Indian security establishment, recent intelligence reports from Pakistan point to the …
