The four-member police team deputed to the Gulshan residence of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, who is now in jail, has been withdrawn.
The police personnel who used to provide security to the former prime minister’s house, “Firoza,” at Road No 79 in Dhaka’s Gulshan area were withdrawn around 3:30pm on Wednesday, her media wing member Shamsuddin Didar told UNB.
He said the police team comprising an assistant sub-inspector and three constables left in the afternoon saying they had been recalled by higher authorities.
When contacted, Gulshan police station OC Abu Bakar Siddique said he was not aware of it as the Gulshan diplomatic zone police dealt with the security issues of the area.
However, a Gulshan diplomatic zone police official, requesting anonymity, said they were only assigned to ensure the all-out security of foreign diplomats, not any person’s residence.
On February 8, Khaleda Zia was sent to the old Dhaka central jail after a special court sentenced her to five years’ rigorous imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case.
‘Now Tarique is the government’s target’: Meanwhile, BNP on Wednesday alleged that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was now devising a new roadmap to take political revenge on the party’s acting chairperson Tarique Rahman.
“She (Hasina) has now made Tarique Rahman her target. She is trying to make another roadmap to take revenge on him and thus satisfy her anger,” BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi told a press briefing at the party’s Naya Paltan headquarters reacting to the prime minister’s comment on bringing back Tarique from London.
At a program in London on Tuesday, Hasina criticized the UK for giving Tarique shelter since he was convicted by Bangladeshi courts.
“We are in talks with British government about it. And definitely we will take him back one day and he will have to face the court,” she said.
Rizvi said the government’s efforts to bring Tarique back would go in vain as the UK, a democratic and humanitarian country, was well aware of the current Bangladesh government’s “repressive rule, brutality, and cruelty.”
He said their acting chairman was convicted with “Awami League trial procedure” in absence of the rule of law. “Even, now judges cannot stay in the country after delivering fair judgment.”
The BNP leader also said Sheikh Hasina had “refused to reply to a question by British TV station Channel-4 about Bangladesh’s human rights record and enforced disappearances.”
