Pakistan’s fight against terrorism continues as operations in North Waziristan resulted in the successful killing of eight members of the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and confiscation of a large cache of arms from their hideout. Considering that the complete eradication of terrorism depends on the willingness of external powers—like India—to cooperate, we may not be able to escape from the grips of such extremism.
However, this report is evidence of the fact that we have effectively reduced the intensity of the problem to become an inconvenience that must be resolved immediately. It is clear to our authorities that the fight continues domestically and internally, and all efforts must still be focused towards eliminating terrorism as a whole.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) press release, many of those who were killed were commanders in the TTP. Furthermore, they were found to be integral members behind IED attacks, killings, kidnappings, firing and extortion who were aided and motivated by the degree of regional instability present in the status quo.
Such circumstances are inevitable when problematic actors like India refuse to come to the negotiation table to initiate a dialogue in pursuance of peace and harmony. Instead funding for terror groups such as TTP remains a key strategy in the Modi government’s playbook.
Even the possibility of settling for cordial relations, in contrast to the idea of friendly ones, has been rejected by the lack of reciprocation from our neighbour despite the tireless and generous efforts of the Pakistani government. This creates the perfect breeding ground for violent retaliatory terrorism that our authorities must battle on a regular basis.
It must be understood that tough circumstances will prevail if national stability lies in the hands of external powers and their temperaments. Despite this, we have prevailed in our mission to reduce terrorism, if not completely destroy it. The momentum must be kept as the government expands its approach to all levels to push the threat even further back.
