The fear of arrest has gripped the leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Sylhet as police arrested many BNP men including its three expat leaders ahead of the national election.
According to local sources, police arrested BNP’s UK unit joint general secretary Shohidul Islam Mamun from his residence in Sylhet city’s Badambagich on Monday afternoon.
Based on allegations, the law enforcers arrested him from his residence, said Md Abdul Wahab, additional deputy commissioner (Media) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP).
The police officer, however, refused to disclose the matter.
Meanwhile, SMP officials said the secretary might have been detained for his involvement with the attack on Bangladesh High Commission in the UK.
Earlier on 8 February, some BNPleaders and activists attacked the Bangladesh High Commission in the UK as its officials refused to accept a memorandum regarding Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.
On August 27, police arrested Jubo Dal’s London unit president Abul Khayer from the Osmaninagar area in Sylhet.
A Sylhet court granted him two-day remand in a case filed over attacking the Bangladesh High Commission in the UK, said Public Prosecutor Misbahuddin Siraj.
On August 14, police arrested BNP’s Brazil unit leader Helal Ahmed Badsha alias Khaled Ahmed Badsha from the Beanibazar upazila of Sylhet for making derogatory comments about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Facebook.
Seeking anonymity, a BNP expat leader who lives in UK, said he fears that the police may arrest him when he comes to Bangladesh.
Abdul Wahab said police arrested after Badsha posted derogatory comments about PM on Facebook.
A case was filed against him in this connection, he said.
Saleh Ahmed Khashru, BNP’s Sylhet city unit vice president, alleged that the police arrested at least 21 leaders in last three days.
