B’desh: ‘EC tries to nip new political parties, thoughts in the bud’

report in Dhaka Tribune, June 14, 2018 at 09:55 pm
After the Election Commission declared Ganosamhati Andolon ineligible for registration as a new political party, its convener, Junaid Saki, said the EC has been acting against the formation of new parties and emergence new political ideas in the country.

He came up with the reaction at a press briefing in Dhaka on Thursday.

“We applied for getting registered with the Election Commission after fulfilling all necessary conditions. But, we came to know from different media reports that the Commission did not consider Ganosamhati Andolon eligible for registration,” Junaid said.

“On April 8, the Commission asked for an amended and revised version of our constitution clarifying our nomination procedures and declaring Ganosamhati Andolon has no associate organization. We submitted the revised constitution accordingly.”

“The main task of the EC is to facilitate those who are interested to join politics, and ensure equal opportunities for all. Instead of doing so, it is acting as a fundamental barrier to the rise of new political parties,” he said.

The left-leaning politician said the government is employing “increasingly restrictive measures to control politics.”

“The military-backed caretaker government of Fakhruddin Ahmed tried to control politics and political parties in the name of Representation of the People Order (RPO). The current government is trying to control politics and people’s thoughts even more through reinforcing those measures of the caretaker administration.”

He urged the Commission to reconsider Ganosamhati Andolon’s application and allow it in politics.

Junaid also announced that they would hold a roundtable discussion at the National Press Club on June 27 in this regard and press briefings at their district-level offices across the country on June 30.
