Bangladesh has at least 7 million drug addicts and 5 million of them are hooked on yaba pills, according to people familiar with the situation.

The government has no statistics on the drug addicts, but the Department of Narcotics Control Director General Md Jamal Uddin Ahmed supports the statistics of the non-government organisations working on eliminating drugs.

Reached by bdnews24.com for the exact figure of addicts following the prime minister declaring a crackdown on drugs on Sunday and amid operations by agencies, he said information from unofficial sources have to be relied upon.

“The department does not have its own statistics,” Jamal Uddin said, “But according to those who work on these issues, the number of drug addicts is about 7 million. The department supported the statistics.”
