A senior BNP leader has accused the prison authorities of ignoring their requests of arranging “better treatment” for incarcerated party chief Khaleda Zia.
“It appears that the government has ordered the jail authorities to ensure that her (Khaleda’s) physical condition deteriorates,” BNP’s Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi told the media on Monday.
He said the move was tantamount to torturing a prisoner.
Former prime minister Khaleda has been kept at the old central jail since February 8, after a Dhaka court sentenced her to five years in prison for corruption.
The 73-year old was taken to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University on April 7 for medical examinations. She had reportedly fallen ill last month.
“Her physical condition has worsened,” Rizvi claimed. “The pain in her hands, legs and waist has increased.”
Khaleda has long been suffering from pain in her knees and legs, according to him.
Rizvi described how the BNP chief had been denied an orthopaedic bed even though it was recommended by the government-sanctioned medical board.
“She urgently needs better medical treatment but the jail authorities are not paying any heed, at the government’s order,” he claimed.
“I am expressing grave concern at the news of her serious illness,” Rizvi said. “We demand allowing her to be treated by her personal physicians at the United Hospital.”https://www.dhakatribune.com/bangladesh/politics/2018/04/16/allow-khaleda-personal-physicians-treat/
