A senior Awami League leader has gone to the scene of the protest against existing quota system in government jobs to announce that the government will sit down with the protesters at the orders of the prime minister.
Jahangir Kabir Nanak spoke to the press around 1:40am Monday at Shahbagh as violent clashes were going on in the Dhaka University area.
He said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had told Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport Minister Obaidul Quader to sit with the demonstrators in the morning to resolve the outstanding issues.
He said the meting would be held at 11am, but he could not say what the venue would be.
On Sunday evening, police cracked down on the protesters who had taken position at the Shahbagh intersection. Violent clashes ensued and spread into the Dhaka University campus.
