Two extremists killed in Jhenaidah gunfight

Jhenaidah: Two members of banned outfit East Bengal Communist Party have been killed in an alleged gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Jhenaidah’s Kotchandpur Upazila.
The deceased are Maidul Islam Rana, 50 and his associate Alim Uddin, 60. They were accused in several cases including murder.
Jhenaidah RAB 6 Company Commander Major Monir Ahmed said the incident took place early Wednesday in Baharampur area under the upazila.
Three RAB officials have also been injured during the skirmish.
“Being tipped off we conducted a drive in the area where the members of the banned outfit were having a meeting,” the RAB official said.
“Sensing RAB’s presence, the extremists opened fire towards the RAB officials. RAB fired back in retaliation, leaving Rana and Alim injured.”
“Their cohorts however managed to flee the scene. They were taken to Kotchandpur Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared them dead.”
The injured RAB men underwent treatment at the same hospital.
