Submarines from China to not spark negative reaction: Hasina

Report in Prothom ALo, July 12, 2017 at 23:11 hrs
Prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday said there will be no negative reaction in the international arena due to the procurement of two submarines from China as it was a decision of national interest, reports UNB.

“I believe the procurement of submarines from China is a decision of national interest and there’ll be no negative reaction in international arena for this,” she said.

The prime minister said this while responding to a starred question from M Rustam Ali Farazi (Pirojpur-3) in parliament during PM’s question-answer session.

She said Bangladesh procured the two submarines –‘BNS Nabajatra’ and ‘BNS Agrojatra’ — aiming to upgrade Bangladesh Navy to a three-dimensional force to modernise the country’s defence system. “This has elevated Bangladesh in the field of national and international politics,” she said.

Hasina told the House that the submarines will help protect Bangladesh from any attack of exterior enemy, give security to commercial vessels in the deep sea, gather important operational information and play an important role in guarding country’s sovereignty.

Besides, the prime minister hoped, these will ensure foolproof security in oil and gas exploration in the sea and play a special role in availing of the benefits of blue economy and accelerate the country’s economic development.

The two submarines reached Bangladesh on 25 December 2016 while prime minister commissioned those in Bangladesh Navy on 12 March of this year.
