Sindh regime moves to pacify Ulema over new law: report in The News, December 06, 2016

Karachi: Ulema upset over the new law on forced conversions in Sindh have been pacified with the suggestion that a provincial chapter of the Council of Islamic Ideology could be constituted to address such concerns.

Less than a fortnight ago the Sindh Assembly had unanimously passed into law the Sindh Criminal Law (Protection of Minorities) Bill 2015 in a bid to prevent and criminalise forced religious conversions and subsequent forced marriages.

Concerned Ulema met with Dr Abdul Qayyum Soomro, the chief minister’s special assistant on religious affairs, on Monday and complained about the new law, terming it against the basic principles of Islam. They demanded that the law be withdrawn.

Soomro assured the Ulema that the Sindh government would never adopt a law that is against the fundamental teachings of Islam, adding that the provincial administration could establish its own CII to resolve such disputes.

Regarding preparations for Eid Milad-un-Nabi on December 12, the Ulema agreed to senior police officers’ proposal to ban pillion riding on motorcycles and suspend mobile phone services to ensure security.

The CM’s aide assured the Ulema that the Sindh administration would approach the federal government to ensure uninterrupted power and CNG supply across the province.https://www.thenews.com.pk/print/170035-Sindh-regime-moves-to-pacify-Ulema-over-new-law
