RAB has arrested two suspected militants in separate drives across Dhaka on Sunday. The arrestees are Chowdhury Hamdan bin Firoze, alias Muhit, 43, and Ruhullah Atique, alias Nurullah, 32.
A statement released by Additional Superintendent of Police Md Shakil Ahmed of RAB-11 confirmed that Firoze had trained militant activists in Kung Fu, a branch of Chinese martial arts.
The duo were arrested from the Abdullapur and Shanir Akhra areas of the capital.
Firoze took up an LLB course at a private university in Dhaka in 2006. Abandoning his studies in 2009, he joined a madrasa to learn the Arabic language.
He left Bangladesh to work at a company in Dubai between 2010 and 2013. He returned home in 2015 and started working at a mobile phone showroom in Dhaka.
Mahmudur Rahman alias Helal, a militant who has already been arrested by RAB-11, indoctrinated Firoze into militancy in 2016.
Firoze joined the Tamim-Sarwar militant faction the same year. He had trained militants in Kung Fu and transferred money from the militant group to the relatives of arrested activists.
The other suspect, Ruhullah, left Bangladesh for Saudi Arabia after his SSC exam in 1998. He worked as a driver there for 16 years and returned home in 2013, taking up a job as a rural doctor.
He got involved in militancy later in the same year under the influence of Abdul Gaffar, an arrested militant who was also his close relative. Ruhullah joined the notorious Tamim-Sarwar group in 2016 and began to act as a recruiter for the terror outfit.
During the initial interrogation, Ruhullah confessed that he had recruited a number of people to New JMB, including his close relatives.
