GILGIT: Although the schedule of the Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly polls has yet to be announced, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif as the PML-N president has formed a 16 members committee for his party`s election campaign.

The committee consists of federal ministers and PML-N central leaders.

According to political adviser to the PML-N GB Shams Mir, the committee is headed by Maryam Nawaz, daughter of the prime minister, while MNA Hamza Shahbaz, National Assembly deputy speaker Murtaza Javed Abbasi, federal education minister Balighur Rehman, inter-provincial coordination minister Riaz Ahmad Pirzada, commerce minister Khurram Dastagir, religious affairs minister Sardar Mohammad Yousaf, state minister for water and power Chaudhry Abid Sher Ali, railways minister Khawaja Saad Rafiq, petroleum and natural resources minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Senator Tariq Azeem, Professor Sajid Mir, MNA Chaudhry Hamid Hameed, Tahir Iqbal, Benazir Income Support Programme chairwoman Marvi Memon and Sheikh Waqas Akram are its members. Shams Mir told Dawn on Thursday that the committee would begin the election campaign during a public meeting in Gilgit on March 16.

The PML-N adviser said the committee would prepare a report on the empowerment of GB Legislative Assembly and GB representation in the national institutions.

He said the committee members would also visit all districts of the region and hold public meetings in the region to get the people`s input on various issues.

Shams Mir said the committee would monitor the PML-N election campaign in seven districts of the region besides organising visits of the representatives of Transparency International, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and national and international media organisations to monitor the upcoming elections.

He said the PML-N wanted to ensure the holding of free, fair and transparent elections in the region.

The PML-N adviser said the prime minister would visit the region next month to inaugurate mega development projects.

He said Gilgit-Baltistan Governor Barjees Tahir would also go to the region on March 6 to examine work on development schemes.

Shams Mir said the federal government had approved the important pending projects in the region, including Gilgit-Skardu Road, Bounji Dam, Babosar Pass, and four hydropower projects in Gilgit.

He said work on development projects would begin soon.

The PML-N adviser said the federal government was considering establishing two free zones in the region under the Pakistan-China Economic Corridor Project. http://epaper.dawn.com/DetailImage.php?StoryImage=27_02_2015_007_001
