Kohistanis block KKH against suspension of police recruitment

MANSEHRA, Aug 29: The enraged residents of Kohistan blocked Karakoram Highway (KKH) for entire day on Wednesday to protest suspension of recruitment process in police department.

A large number of people including candidates, who have applied for 115 vacant posts in police, and their relatives placed stones and rocks on KKH in the morning to block it to traffic.

Hundreds of passenger vehicles remained stranded on both sides of the road till evening.

The protesters threatened that the road would remain blocked if their demands were not met.

“We want nothing but resumption of recruitment process under former District Police Officer Abdul Majeed Afridi, who was transferred for his honesty as he refused to bow down to political pressure,” said a leader of the protesters.

The protesters said that physical fitness tests for appointment of 115 policemen were conducted on Tuesday but DPO Afridi was ordered by provincial government to suspend the process till next order.

More than 400 candidates came to appear in the written test on Wednesday morning but they were informed about suspension of recruitment process. The candidates, instead of going back to their homes, blocked KKH to protest the decision of the provincial government.

Addressing the protesters, Maulana Kareemdad, Mehtab Khan, Abdul Jabbar and Ghulam Saeed alleged that ANP MPA Sajjadullah Khan had asked the DOP to appoint his 60 men without observing merit. The MPA got the recruitment process postponed though provincial government and transferred the DOP, when the latter didn’t accept his unjust demand, they said. http://dawn.com/2012/08/30/kohistanis-block-kkh-against-suspension-of-police-recruitment/
