KKH blockade creates edibles` shortage in GB

GILGIT, Jan 10: The residents of Chilas and surrounding areas continued blockade of the Karakuram Highway for fourth straight day on Tuesday to press the government for arrest of the murderers of a local man, who was gunned down a few days ago in Gilgit.

The blockade of road has led to severe shortage of edibles and other necessities of life in Gilgit and other towns of the region. The protesters demanded of the government to make sure that their demands were met, which they have already presented before the Chief Minister Syed Mehdi Shah.

When contacted the Diamir district magistrate Sibtain Ahmed told this correspondent by phone that the protesters were not ready to lift blockade of the road till acceptance of their demands.

He said the administration had also involved the political figures, notables, ulema and numberdars but so far no headway was made.

Meanwhile, all transport companies have taken their vehicle off the Karakuram Highway in view of the continuous blockade of the artery by protesters in Chilas.
