Kidnapping of Chinese national: The News, MAY 23, 2014

PESHAWAR: Secretary Home and Tribal Affairs Syed Akhtar Ali Shah on Thursday held responsible the police personnel manning a checkpost for not checking the Chinese national who was kidnapped in Dera Ismail Khan on May 19.

Talking the reporters at the inauguration of Model Police Unit in Faqirabad Police Station, the secretary Home and Tribal Affairs said the police should have stopped the Chinese tourist and properly checked his document.

He stopped short of saying the police discharging duties at one of the checkposts from where the Chinese passed by should have checked whether he was travelling with valid documents.A Home and Tribal Affairs Department official on condition of anonymity told The News that visa of the kidnapped Chinese was also about to expire.

The Chinese tourist, identified as Hong Xu Dong, was kidnapped on May 19, around 2pm, while cycling 65 kilometres from Dera Ismail Khan.

It was the responsibility of the police to stop the Chinese tourist from crossing into the sensitive areas and that too on a bicycle, Akhtar Ali Shah said.

About action against the police whom he held responsible for the dereliction of duties and allowing the Chinese to cross into somewhat danger zone, he said the police personnel deputed at the checkpost were suspended and the Home and Tribal Department had got intimation from DI Khan commissioner in this regard.
