Dhaka: The government has lodged a strong protest on the incident of firing at a fishing boat in Naf River on February 6 by Myanmar Border Guard Police.
In a Diplomatic note sent to the Myanmar Embassy in Dhaka, the Foreign Ministry protested the attack that caused the life of an innocent Bangladeshi fisherman, according to a press release.
The ministry called the shooting at an unarmed Bangladeshi fishing boat an act of unprovoked aggression.
One fisherman died while another was seriously injured in the firing.
Referring to a similar incident of unprovoked firing at a civilian boat on December 27 last year near the Saint Martin’s island, the Ministry expressed deep concern at the repetition of such acts of aggression that do not contribute towards building up of an atmosphere of mutual trust and understanding among neighbours.
The ministry urged the Myanmar government to ensure that the concerned authorities of Myanmar desist from repeating such acts of aggression.
On February 6, a Bangladeshi fisherman was killed and another injured by Myanmar Border Guard Police (BGP) shooting at the Teknaf border in Cox’s Bazar.
The deceased was Nurul Amin, son of Kabir Ahmed of Chowdhurypara village of Teknaf.
Fisherman Mohammad Hakim, who witnessed the incident, said: “Three of us, including Amin, went to fish on the Moulvibazar Point of Naf River in the morning. At that time, seven BGP members drove a patrol boat into Bangladesh territory. They opened fire on us, leaving two injured.
“Later, with the help of other fishermen, we rushed the duo to Teknaf Health Complex where the doctor declared Amin dead.”
Hospital’s Medical Officer Dr Suban Das said: “Amin died due to excessive bleeding and another fisherman was sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital as his condition deteriorated.” http://www.dhakatribune.com/bangladesh/2017/02/09/dhaka-sends-protest-myanmar/
