Kashmiri leader warns of picking up arms against India: by Wajid Ali Syed in The News, June 6, 2014

WASHINGTON: Former AJK Prime Minister Barrister Sultan Mahmood Chaudhry fears that frustrated Kashmiri youth can once again pick up arms against the Indian aggression if the Kashmir issue was not resolved before the Western forces leave Afghanistan.

Talking to Kashmiri Diaspora here on Wednesday, Barrister Sultan Mahmood said that the US officials realize that arms race in the region, as well as an increase in the nuclear capability of the two countries, is due to the Kashmir conflict between India and Pakistan.

“The US acknowledges the issue. Late Ambassador Holbrooke mentioned that in his speeches and that’s the reason that after September 11 incident, the US pressurised Pakistan and India to discuss the conflict,” he said adding that “the US understood that Kashmir issue was linked to the nuclear arms and jihadi problems.”

Answering a question, the former Azad Kashmir premier said that armed struggle, “which is known as resistance movement” which started in 1988 made the international community realize the importance of the conflict. “The second time the international community paid any heed to Kashmir issue was after nuclear tests in 1998.”

The resistance movement died down after the 9/11 incident, he said adding that India labelled the movement as terrorism. “It was an opportunity for India to resolve the issue through dialogue and negotiations. But the ongoing human rights violations could push the frustrated Kashmiri youth to pick up arms once again,” he said. Barrister Sultan said that he had meetings with State department officials during his visit to Washington where he briefed that the US need to play its role in resolving the issue before western forces leave Afghanistan.

He said that even though Modi-Nawaz meeting was a step forward in establishing good relations between the two countries, he sees no progress on Kashmir issue for now.He said he has also advised that all political parties in Pakistan should get together and form a “national policy on Kashmir.” The Kashmiris on both sides should also be part of any negotiations between India and Pakistan, “and there should be an intra Kashmir dialogue,” he said. http://www.thenews.com.pk/Todays-News-2-254455-Kashmiri-leader-warns-of-picking-up-arms-against-India
