Defence chiefs’ tenure to be four years, Draft law gets nod

Report in The Daily Star, Aug 1, 2017
The cabinet yesterday gave its final approval to a draft law on increasing the service tenure of the chiefs of army, navy and the air force to four years.

Traditionally, the chiefs of the three forces are appointed for three years. In some cases, their service time is extended.

As per the proposed “Defence Forces Chiefs (appointment, retirement and salary and allowances) Act-2017”, their service tenure will be four years with no provision for reappointment.

The draft law was approved at the cabinet’s weekly meeting at the secretariat, with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair. Cabinet Secretary M Shafiul Alam briefed reporters after the meeting.

He said no law had been enacted for appointment of the chiefs of the three forces in the last 46 years, which was why the draft law was proposed.

According to the proposed law, the chiefs would get salary equivalent to that of cabinet secretary in addition to allowances they now enjoy. After their retirement, they would not be reappointed to any civil or military administration.

However, they would be eligible to work in any constitutional position or at any private organisation on a contractual basis.

Incumbent army chief General Abu Belal Muhammad Shafiul Huq will retire on June 25, 2018, air force chief Air Marshal Abu Esrar on June 12, 2018, and navy chief Admiral Nizamuddin Ahmed on January 27, 2019.http://www.thedailystar.net/backpage/defence-chiefs-tenure-be-four-years-1441774
