KARACHI: The city’s two jails are reported to be the most overcrowded among the 25 prisons of Sindh as both house close to three times the inmates than their actual capacity, it emerged here on Saturday.
A report prepared by the prisons department for the home ministry shows the Central Prison Karachi (CPK), the second-oldest jail after Hyderabad, built in 1899, houses 6,174 prisoners against the authorised capacity for 2,400 inmates.
The CPK inmates include 1,156 convicts — 1,012 ordinary and 144 condemned — while 4,906 are under-trial prisoners (UTPs).

KARACHI: A group of 35 retired IGs of the Police Service of Pakistan have expressed concern over the way Sindh IGP A.D. Khowaja has been asked by the Sindh government to go on leave and termed the provincial government move unjustified.
In a statement sent to Dawn on Monday, the retired IGs said that the Sindh government’s action was unjustified and that an upright and professional officer was being forced to leave his job for not kowtowing to illegitimate wishes of some very influential persons.

KARACHI/HYDE­RA­BAD: As the federal government had refused to accede to the request of the Sindh government to remove the Inspector General of Police, the PPP-led provincial government finally got rid of A.D. KARACHI: The Sindh prisons department has demanded at least 2,900 guarding staff and formation of a separate special prison security force (SPSF) to effectively safeguard the 25 detention facilities across the province, it emerged here on Monday.
“We are facing a real danger of terrorism on our prisons, which requires all sorts of measures to keep the security intact,” said a senior official at the home ministry.

KARACHI: Claiming elimination of 368 ‘terrorists’ over the past one year, a report compiled by the Sindh home ministry shows that a significant number of those killed in encounters with law enforcement agencies were ‘religious’ or ‘sectarian’ militants, Dawn learnt on Tuesday.

ISLAMABAD: The army on Wednesday announ­ced its first major appointments since the taking over of its command by Gen Qamar Bajwa last week, with the Karachi-based V Corps getting a new chief.
According to an announcement by the ISPR, Lt Gen Shahid Baig Mirza has been posted as the Corps Commander for Karachi. He is presently serving as the Military Secretary at the General Headquarters.

Karachi: Ulema upset over the new law on forced conversions in Sindh have been pacified with the suggestion that a provincial chapter of the Council of Islamic Ideology could be constituted to address such concerns.

New army chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa, while setting his priorities on external and internal security, needs to give a fresh look to success and shortcomings of the ‘Karachi Targeted Action’ which, if not reviewed in a right perspective, could be counterproductive.

KARACHI: A police officer accused of many criminal cases including murder has been appointed as personal staff officer (PSO) of Sindh Chief Minister.
