B’desh: Even leaders don’t know when Khaleda will return

Report in Prothom Alo, Oct 6, 2017 at 11:15 AM
Khaleda ZiaSenior leaders of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) are not sure when the party chairperson Khaleda Zia, now in London with her son, will return home.

Khaleda’s personal secretary ABM Abdus Sattar, now staying with her in the United Kingdom, however, said the BNP chairperson may return in the third week of this month.

“Her treatment is yet to be done. We hope she will return home after her treatment by the end of October,” Abdus Sattar told Prothom Alo on Thursday over phone.

The BNP chief has been in London since 15 July for medical treatment. She is staying at her elder son Tarique Rahman’s house in London.

Party leaders said Khaleda is taking treatment in her eye and leg in London.

Ruling Bangladesh Awami League (AL) leaders, however, alleged that she is hatching ‘conspiracy’ staying in London.

Staying in London for more than two and a half months, Khaleda did not participate in any political programme.

After Khaleda’s arrival, the BNP will present the framework of a supportive election-time government and has plans to take to the street for the supportive government.

In Khaleda’s absence, BNP leaders were seen delivering speeches on various issues including Rohingya refugees, chief justice Surendra Kumar Sinha’s one-month leave, and so on.

About Khaleda’s return, BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said he does not know when Khaleda will return home.

He told Prothom Alo, “Organisational works are going on smoothly even in the absence of the party chairperson. She gives the party leaders necessary instructions from London. Sometimes BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir takes decision. We, too, highlight the party’s position after conduction meetings.”

The senior vice chairman of the party, Tarique, has been living in the UK since 2008.http://en.prothom-alo.com/bangladesh/news/162029/Khaleda-s-return-date-yet-to-be-fixed
