AJK policeman arrested for links with Sikandar

by Shakeel Anjum  in The News, Aug 21

ISLAMABAD: The people engaged in the investigation of the Blue Area fiasco have arrested a head constable (HC) of Azad Kashmir Police who has links with Malik Sikandar, the gunman who kept the federal capital hostage for six hours on August 15.

The sources claimed that HC Hassan Murtaza was an active member of a banned militant group and Malik Sikandar is also associated with the same group.

They said Hassan Murtaza was deployed at a police post near the Line of Control (LoC) in Azad Kashmir and Malik Sikandar went to meet him on a motorbike along with his five-year-old son in the last week of July this year.

The police have arrested the HC but have so far failed to get any information from him. The sources said that Hassan Murtaza was an army person but he joined the Azad Kashmir Police after retirement.

“Sikandar joined a militant group in 1992 and was sent to a “Mujahideen Camp” near LoC, however, he left for UAE at the completion of his training and remained there for five years but was deported in 2001 on allegation of involvement in suspicious activities, the sources said and added that he again left for Dubai after changing his name.

The sources said that Sikandar’s wife Kanwal remained in touch with a Lahore-based lady reporter of an Urdu newspaper during the fiasco and got advice from her. The police haven’t yet questioned the lady reporter.

“Sikandar is co-operating with the police and has replied to all relevant questions sensibly,” the sources said. “His links with the banned militant group and the motive behind his August 15 action is not fully known yet,” the sources concluded.
