Afghan intel officer arrested in Chaman: The Nation, Apr 29, 2016 by JAWAD R AWAN & IMRAN MUKHTAR

LAHORE/ISLAMABAD – An officer of the Afghan secret service, National Directorate of Security, has been captured at Chaman border crossing in an intelligence-based operation, intelligence sources told The Nation yesterday.

The officer was stationed in Afghan province of Kandahar, they added.

The officer who was under surveillance after his entry into Balochistan via Chaman border was captured as a result of an intelligence-based operation. An intelligence agency of the military also participated in the operation.

The same intelligence service had deputed a spy on the NDS target when he entered the Pak-Afghan bordering area, said the intelligence sources.

However, following the standard operational procedures (SOPs) of the intelligence operations, the target was allowed to move freely in an effort to bust the entire network.

The target was captured at Chaman border when the counter-intelligence section of the military agency reached the assessment that the NDS officer might not have more potential agents than the already identified, they added.

Thorough interrogations are underway at an undisclosed facility of the intelligence service. The agency suspects the captured NDS agent was on a special scouting mission of certain targets.

The targets can include some major security forces’ movements with regard to CPEC and other meetings with some Baloch militant facilitators.

The capture of Commander Kulbhushan Yadav, the RAW’s chief spy for operations targeting Balochistan with special focus on CPEC and Karachi has accelerated the counter-intelligence operations to make it difficult for the foreign spy agencies to operate in the province, claimed the sources.

An agent of NDS and RAW was captured from a compound in Boghra town of Chaman in an Inter-Services Intelligence-led operation on April 6.

The officer of the Afghan secret service told the interrogators in his disclosures that he was in contact with the mid-ranking handlers of the Baloch banned outfits, including Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) of Harbyar Murri, Baloch Republican Army (BRA) of Brahamdagh Bugti and Balochistan Liberation Front (BLF) of Allah Nazar Baloch, to provide them with weapons, ammunition, bombs and other explosive material.

In a statement issued in Islamabad, Interior Ministry said the FIA yesterday arrested an Afghan army officer from Chaman checkpost of Balochistan for having no valid travelling documents.

The interior ministry said that the Afghan army officer was arrested at a time when he was crossing the border to leave Pakistan. The officer had entered into Pakistan illegally without having any legal travelling documents.

FIA handed over the officer to the intelligence and security agencies for further investigations on the directions of Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan.

In the first week of this month, Frontier Corps (FC) had claimed to arrest a suspected Afghan spy working for the Afghanistan’s National Directorate of Security (NDS), an intelligence agency of Afghanistan, from Chaman, Balochistan. The FC spokesperson had stated that the Afghan agent was arrested from a compound in Boghra area and FC personnel recovered explosive materials, detonators and bombs from the premises during the raid.http://nation.com.pk/national/29-Apr-2016/afghan-intel-officer-arrested-in-chaman
